About Us

Founder, Kalaripayattu Association of Goa

Late Adv. Poonthura Soman Gurukkal, was a revered martial arts master, legal professional, and visionary leader in the world of Kalaripayattu, India’s oldest martial tradition. As the 1st Secretary General of the Indian Kalaripayattu Federation (IKF), he played a pivotal role in promoting and standardizing the ancient art across India and beyond. A passionate proponent of traditional knowledge systems, he founded the Goa Kalaripayattu Association, bringing authentic training and recognition to the region. His efforts helped bridge ancient wisdom with modern platforms, earning Kalaripayattu its rightful place in state and national-level competitions. Soman Gurukkal was deeply committed to both the physical discipline and healing science of Kalaripayattu. His legacy lives on through the practitioners, instructors, and institutions he inspired across India.

Our Mission

The mission of the Kalaripayattu Association of Goa (KAG) is to preserve, promote, and propagate the ancient martial art of Kalaripayattu in its authentic form across Goa. We aim to create a strong foundation for physical, mental, and spiritual development through disciplined training, cultural education, and community engagement.

Our Aim

To establish Kalaripayattu as a recognized and respected martial art and fitness discipline in Goa.

To provide structured training programs for all age groups, focusing on self-discipline, strength, flexibility, and mindfulness.

To support and affiliate with the Indian Kalaripayattu Federation and government-recognized sports bodies to ensure legitimacy and opportunities for athletes.

To organize events, workshops, seminars, and competitions to foster a vibrant Kalaripayattu community.

To integrate Kalaripayattu into schools, colleges, and wellness centers as a tool for holistic development and cultural pride.

Khelo India Youth Games

The Khelo India Kalaripayattu Championship is organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI). This event is an initiative, which aims to promote grassroots sports development across the country.

Kalaripayattu, one of the oldest martial arts of the world, was included in the KIYG to preserve and promote India's indigenous sports. Its inclusion reflects the government's commitment to recognizing and nurturing traditional disciplines.

National Kalaripayattu Championship 2024

Every year, the Indian Kalaripayattu Federation (IKF), in association with the Sports Authority of India (SAI), conducts the National Kalaripayattu Championship. This prestigious event brings together the best student athletes selected from each state through rigorous state-level competitions. The championship not only showcases the rich heritage of Kalaripayattu but also aims to identify and nurture young talent, providing them with a national platform to excel in this ancient martial art.
